Fed Cuts Interest Rates for Second Instance This Year During Financial Instability

The US monetary authority lowered interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second reduction in the current year during economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Decision Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve

The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release notes. “Inflation has moved up and stays moderately high.”

Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve typically studies labor statistics to assess employment trends, including the count of new jobs created to the market and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The number of positions created to the economy in August was down by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Slowdown

Though the bureau was set to publish last month’s employment data in early October, it halted its release when the shutdown began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a indication that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said recently, which he had earlier said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Rise

Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the bureau still issued its price statistics for last month that indicated that costs are rising, although gradually. Prices increased 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target price increase is two percent.
