A bettor earned a substantial sum from wagers on the downfall of the Venezuelan leader immediately preceding it was publicly declared, raising questions about potential gains made from confidential information of the event.

Sudden Shift in Forecasts

Bets placed on the crypto-platform, an online prediction market, that the Venezuelan president would be out of power by the close of the month surged in the hours before former President Trump declared on January 3rd that Maduro had been apprehended.

A particular user, which registered on the site recently and took four positions, all on the Venezuelan situation, made more than $nearly half a million from a modest bet of over $32,000.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. The anonymous account had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.

Probability Spikes Before Public Statement

Market statistics shows that participants estimated the likelihood of Maduro's exit at just under 7% in the late afternoon of the Friday before the event.

However the odds had increased to 11% by late Friday night and skyrocketed in the first hours of Saturday, pointing to a sudden change in positions immediately prior to the public announcement was made.

"This specific wager has all the characteristics of a bet based on confidential knowledge," said a financial reform advocate.

A handful of other platform users also made tens of thousands of dollars from predicting the capture.

Political Attention Emerges

Politicians are growing concerned.

Proposed legislation put forward on the start of the week aims to prohibit public officials from placing bets on prediction markets if they have "insider details" related to a market.

Industry Context

Prediction markets have grown significantly in recent years, with participants able to bet on everything from sports outcomes to political events.

This sector encountered regulatory challenges under the previous administration. However it has experienced less resistance during the current presidency.

Trading on insider information is against the law in the traditional financial markets, but there are more ambiguous rules in the forecasting arena.

An official representative for Kalshi said their site "strictly forbids trading on insider information of any form."
